What we do here

Six things this clinic is for

Everything below happens in the Croydon consulting room. If you are not sure which one you need, say what you have noticed and we will work it out at the appointment.

  1. 01

    Ear wax removal

Microsuction, which lifts the wax out under a microscope rather than flushing the ear with water. Quick, and it does not leave you soaked.

  2. 02

    Hearing tests

A full assessment rather than a screening: video otoscopy, pure-tone and speech audiometry, ear pressure testing and word list tests, with the results explained to you while you are in the chair.

  3. 03

    Hearing aid demonstrations

Try the styles before you decide. Behind-the-ear, receiver-in-canal, in-the-ear, completely-in-canal and invisible-in-canal, from the manufacturers Regain Hearing works with, including Oticon, Signia, Phonak and Starkey.

  4. 04

    Tinnitus care

Ringing, buzzing or whistling gets a proper assessment first, then counselling and sound therapy to reduce how much of your day it takes up.

  5. 05

    Custom ear protection

Earplugs moulded to your own ears, for work, for music, for sleeping or for swimming. Off-the-shelf plugs seal badly and get left out.

  6. 06

    Aftercare and accessories

Domes, sleeves, wax guards, batteries and general ear care, plus servicing and reprogramming for aids that are already yours.

Your appointment

What actually happens when you come in

Not every test is run on every person. What we do depends on what you have noticed and on what turns up as we go.

  1. We talk first

What prompted the visit, what you struggle to hear, and anything already diagnosed. This decides which tests are worth doing.

  2. Video otoscopy

A small camera gives a live view inside the ear canal. You can watch the screen too, and see wax, inflammation or infection for yourself.

  3. The hearing tests

Pure-tone and speech audiometry through headphones, tympanometry to check the pressure and health of the middle ear, and word list tests to see how you cope with speech when there is background noise.

  4. Speech mapping and simulation

Speech mapping shows how your ears are actually handling sound, which is what hearing aid programming is tuned against. A hearing loss simulator can play back what your hearing is like, which is often the easiest way to explain it to family.

  5. What to do about it

The results, in plain terms, and the options. If nothing needs doing, we say so.

Finding us and parking

Airport House, 265 Purley Way

Airport House is the old Croydon Airport terminal, a white art deco building on Purley Way among the retail parks. It is hard to miss, and the aircraft parked in front of it settles any doubt.

  • Parking is free and directly outside the building, a short walk to the entrance.
  • The clinic is a consulting room inside Airport House Business Centre, not a shop front.
  • There is a cafe and a bar and restaurant within Airport House itself.
  • Nothing about the appointment stops you carrying on with your day afterwards.

What people say

4.9 out of 5, across 132 Google reviews

That is the rating on the Croydon listing itself, not a figure pooled from every clinic in the group.

“Anxious autistic adult daughter needed wax removal from ears. Maxine at Airport House, Croydon was wonderful. Answered all my daughter's questions with great patience. Procedure was swift and pain free.”

On what it costs

There is no price list on this page, because quoting a figure that might be out of date helps nobody. Call and ask what the appointment you need costs today, and you will know before you come in.

Questions we get asked

Before you book

Does microsuction hurt?
It should not. Some people notice a feeling of pressure, or mild discomfort, and the suction is audible. If anything is painful, say so and we stop.
Will a hearing test tell me what is causing my tinnitus?
Not always. A hearing test finds any underlying hearing loss that may be feeding it, which is often the useful part, but it does not always pin down a single cause. The assessment looks wider than the audiogram for that reason.
How long does it take to get used to hearing aids?
Anywhere from a few days to several weeks, and it varies a lot between people. The adjustment is a process we take you through rather than something you are sent home to manage alone.
Which hearing aid styles can I try?
Behind-the-ear, receiver-in-canal, in-the-ear, completely-in-canal and invisible-in-canal. Which of those suits you depends on your hearing loss, the shape of your ear canal and how much you want to handle day to day.
Can someone come to the house instead?
Regain Hearing runs a Hear at Home service using the same equipment as the clinics, for hearing tests, wax removal, and hearing aid fitting or repair. Ask about it when you call and we will tell you what covers this area.
Do I need an appointment?
Book if you can. The Croydon room is staffed for booked appointments, so turning up unannounced risks finding nobody free.
